Up to the year 2008, Beijing will invest up to 280 billion (Yuan) in Olympic Games. The huge investment will push forward economic growth for Beijing as well as the whole country. Therefore it is appropriate to say that the 2008 Olympics will broadly and deeply influence on Chinese economy and social growth.
The influences will be on three main aspects, the service industry, social infrastructure and culture.
Firstly, as the 2008 Olympics are approaching, corporations have improved their professional service up to a new level, especially in leisure industry such as retailing, hotels and other social services. Most Chinese people see the Olympic Games not only a great business opportunity but also an opportunity to demonstrate ourselves to foreign visitors. Therefore quality control, staff training on customer service, language training etc, various techniques are employed by employers in retail and leisure industry to ensure their competitive advantage during Beijing Olympic Games. Also new types of service such as call centres and Olympics ticket management and tourism will bring lots of employment opportunities and business profits.
Secondly, social infrastructure is also significantly improved because of the Olympic Games. Not to mention all the sporting facilities built for the competitions and the hotels and colleges built for athletics, Beijing government has spent at least 74 billion only on the social infrastructure development including public transport, rail tracks, landline telephone infrastructure, and waste water treatment etc. All these investments will boost up the economy and create a pre-Olympic investment boom, not only impact on the daily life on Beijing residents, but also creates a lot of business opportunities for corporations across the country.
Thirdly, and the deepest, most important impact, is the cultural influence Olympics have on this country. Beijing residents are now fond of learning English and speaking English. Most importantly, they start to realise that it is very important that they will need to know more about both languages and culture in order to answer visitor’s friendly and curious questions. This effect contrarily ignites a trend in pursuing our traditional culture, such as calligraphy and historical stories; so that our people can better demonstrate our great culture to the dear visitors and let them know more about the old, mysterious eastern country. This effect is undoubtedly most influential as it will promote our culture not only to foreigners, but also our busy local residents.
