以测定Cl-为例:在含有Cl-的中性溶液中,加入铬酸钾为指示剂,用AgNO3滴定液直接滴定,其反应如下:
终点前:Ag+ + Cl- =AgCl沉淀
终点时:2Ag+ + CrO4 2- =Ag2CrO4沉淀
由于AgCl的溶解度小于Ag2CrO4沉淀的溶解度,在滴定过程中,AgCl沉淀首先析出,待AgCl定量沉淀后,过量一滴AgNO3标准溶液即与K2CrO4生成砖红色的Ag2CrO4沉淀,从而指示终点到达.

加入铬酸钾指示剂的用量可根据溶度积常数进行计算 :(化学计量点时)
[Ag+]=[Cl-]=Ksp(AgCl)1/2 =1.25×10-5 mol/L
[CrO42-]=Ksp(Ag2CrO4)/[Ag+]2 =0.70×10-2 mol/L
当溶液中[CrO42-] [Ag+]2 > Ksp(Ag2CrO4)指示剂显色
实验确定:
加入铬酸钾指示剂的浓度以 510-3 mol/L为宜,通常在每50ml总反应液中加入含量为5%(g/ml)的铬酸钾指示液1~2ml
[CrO42- ]太大,终点提前,CrO42-黄色干扰
[CrO42- ]太小,终点滞后

不能在酸性溶液中进行:酸性使CrO42-浓度降低,导致终点推迟

预处理:

3、滴定时应充分振摇:防止吸附作用
生成的卤化银沉淀吸附溶液中过量的卤离子,使溶液中卤离子浓度降低,以致终点提前而引入误差.因此,滴定时必须剧烈摇动.
铬酸钾法不适用于测定碘化物及硫氰酸盐,因为AgI和AgSCN沉淀更强烈地吸附I-和SCN-,强烈摇动达不到解除吸附(解吸)的目的.
4、消除干扰离子
凡是能与Ag+和CrO42-生成微溶化合物或配合物的阴、阳离子,都干扰测定,应预先分离除去.
