The roses, red and white,

The lilacs where the robin built,
And where my brother set
The laburnum on his birth-day,
The tree is living yet!

Where I used to swing,
And thought the air must rush as fresh
To swallows on the wing;
My spirit flew in feathers then
That is so heavy now,
And summer pools could hardly cool
The fever on my brow.

The fir trees dark and high;
I used to think their slender tops
Were close against the sky:
It was childish ignorance,
But now 'tis little joy
To know I'm farther off from Heaven
Than when I was a boy.

在每一节，诗人通过今与昔、欢乐与痛苦的对比，来表达他对现实的不满和无奈。所以前面都语速轻快，面对微笑；but now之后就声音沉重，可以皱一皱眉头。最后一节的最后一句话 （To know I'm farther off from Heaven；Than when I was a boy）要更加突出，读得慢一点。
